Veterans place boughs at graves of 7 at Wood National Cemetery

At Wood National Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, Kevin Kavanaugh, a Vietnam veteran and officer in the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and Jason Jarentowski, an Iraq veteran, carefully placed wreaths next to the graves of the cemetery's seven Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. Purchased by the Purple Heart veterans group from a local Boy Scout troop, the wreaths were adorned with purple ribbons, purple heart-shaped ornaments, plastic purple poinsettias and white-tipped pine cones.

Kavanaugh has been doing this each Christmas since 2004. Back then there were four graves of Wisconsin military members who had lost their lives in Iraq. More have been added as the wars escalated. The most recent grave was dug last month.
