The Military Order of the Purple Heart
SOME GAVE ALL, ALL GAVE SOME

For Immediate Release

Washington DC - February 28, 2013

SENATOR PATTY MURRAY HONORED BY MOPH AS 2013 INSPIRATIONAL LEADER

Each year, the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) is honored to pay special recognition to a National leader who best demonstrates inspirational leadership and distinguished service to our nation’s veterans.  On February 27, MOPH National Commander Bruce McKenty presented this year’s Special Leadership Award to Washington Senator Patty Murray, a distinguished Member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs who has consistently demonstrated exceptional concern for the combat-wounded and their families.  Since being elected to the Senate in 1992, Senator Murray has been an outspoken advocate for veterans, military members and their families, ensuring that America meets its obligation to those men and women who wear and have worn the uniform for our nation’s military.

Senator Murray was the first female Senator to serve on the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee and served as its Chair in the 112th congress. Having been raised in the family of a disabled World War II veteran, she came to the senate fully understanding the sacrifices, as well as the physical and emotional scars that veterans bring home with them. She has consistently been a tireless advocate for all veterans, leading the battle for increased funding for veterans’ healthcare and benefits, and profoundly recognized the importance of specialized programs for veterans suffering from TBI and PTSD. Senator Murray continues to support education and employment opportunities, better health care for women veterans and myriad other programs that she believes America owes its veterans. Senator Murray’s service reflects great credit upon herself, the United States Senate and the United States of America.

The organization now known as the "Military Order of the Purple Heart of the U.S.A. Inc.," (MOPH) was formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of all who have received the decoration. Chartered by the Congress, The MOPH is unique among Veteran Service Organizations in that all its members were wounded in combat. For this sacrifice, they were awarded the Purple Heart Medal. With grants from the MOPH Service Foundation, the MOPH and its Ladies Auxiliary promote Patriotism, Fraternalism, and the Preservation of America's military history. Most importantly, they provide comfort and assistance to all Veterans and their families, especially those requiring claims assistance with the VA, those who are homeless, and those requiring employment assistance. Through the VAVS program, MOPH volunteers provide assistance to hospitalized veterans at VA sites and State Veterans Homes.
