MOPH Department of Texas Honors Wife of Texas Fallen Hero
by John Bircher, MOPH Public Relations

On June 15, 2013, MOPH National Commander Bruce McKenty and the Department of Texas paused during the Texas State Convention to honor Mrs. Alina Wright, wife of Specialist James C. Wright, who was killed in action in Iraq on 18 Sep 2003.

The Department displayed its “Texas Fallen Heroes Memorial Wall” in the lobby of the El Tropicano Hotel during its annual convention.   Mrs. Wright, who lives in Clifton, TX, happened to be staying at the hotel with her two sons, Jameson and Ian, for a karate competition.  As she walked through the lobby, she noticed the Memorial Wall and walked over to view it closer.  Patriot Felix Garcia of Houston noticed her looking at the Fallen Heroes of 2003 panel and asked whether she knew someone on the wall.  “Yes, my husband,” responded Mrs. Wright.  Garcia quickly sought out newly elected Commander Tony Roman and together with Waymon Faulkner and John Footman, keepers of the Wall, they asked if she would agree to a small ceremony to honor her and her children at the end of the day – to which she agreed.

In a brief ceremony next to her husband’s plaque, MOPH National Commander Bruce McKenty presented Mrs. Wright and her sons with “Proud Supporter” pins and his “National Commander’s Coin.”  Department Commander Roman presented her with the Texas Fallen Heroes Memorial Coin.  Mrs. Wright, herself a veteran of both the USMC and US Army from 1996-2004, told the story of how she and her husband had met while serving in the USMC and after a brief separation from the military, joined the US Army together.  She was awaiting the birth of their son Jameson when James deployed to Iraq and was killed in action.  In honoring Mrs. Wright, Commander McKenty remarked, “We want to honor you first as a Gold Star Spouse, but also for your own service and sacrifice.”
