Retired Marine Pete Meletis would like folks to "fall in love with America all over again."

And the Mooresville resident hopes that by organizing a local Military Order of the Purple Heart chapter, he and fellow veterans can help residents do just that.

Meletis began his military career after graduating high school in Alexandria, Va. "I was restless, and I wanted to see what the Marines were all about and if I could measure up," he said.

"After I arrived at Parris Island, it was totally different than I expected, but the training and discipline that came with the Marines is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I went to college at Wake Forest, but I maintain that I got the greatest education in the Marines."

The Korean War was part of Meletis' education and it changed him forever.
